Avranches, located in the Manche département (Normandy region), is a French village with a population of 10,155. With a particularly rich and storied past, Avranches boasts an impressive heritage , including ramparts, a keep and the Grand Doyenné. Saint Gervais Basilica
The Basilique Saint Gervais was built in the 17th century and underwent a great deal of renovation work during the 19th century. However, it was in 2010 that the Basilica’s restoration took on a whole new, much more significant dimension.
Since 2006, the Basilique Saint Gervais has been listed as a Monument Historique. The basilica is also home to the famous “treasure”…
The Treasury
This is a collection of religious objects that are carefully preserved in a room belonging to the church. This is the treasure of the Basilica of Saint Gervais.
With the French Revolution and the separation of Church and State in 1904, parish property was confiscated and destroyed.
At that time, the clergy of Avranches, led by Father Cornille, set about creating a parish museum where, as the years went by, a large number of objects related to religion were collected.
The main object of this collection is the skull of Bishop Aubert, marked by the fingerprint of the Archangel Saint Michael. Many visitors flock to the site every year to admire this exceptional object.
Saint Saturnin Church
The Church of Saint Saturnin is the oldest religious building in the commune of Avranches, according to several historians and their theories and studies.
The church’s rather small dimensions prompted work to enlarge it in the mid-19th century. At the time, the church was “crowded” on market days, according to the parish council.
Notre-Dame-des-Champs church
With its neo-Gothic style, Notre Dame des Champs church was built and extended from the 19th to the 20th century.
The work in question included the addition of two towers and two massive organs.
Jardin des Plantes
This hilltop garden offers a splendid view over the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. It was even an important source of inspiration for a short story written by author Guy de Maupassant.
The storms of 1999 caused a great deal of damage here, leading to compulsory restoration work in 2006. Visitors can now admire twelve themed gardens.
