Saint Gervais Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Gervais was built in the 17th century and underwent a great deal of renovation work during the 19th century. However, it was not until 2010 that its restoration took a completely different and much more significant turn.

Since 2006, the Basilica of Saint Gervais has also been listed as a Historic Monument. It is also in this basilica that the famous “treasure” can be found…

The Treasury

This is a collection of objects related to religion that is carefully kept in a room belonging to the church. This is known as the “treasure of the Basilica of Saint Gervais”.

It was at the time of the French Revolution and the separation of Church and State in 1904 that the property belonging to the parishes was confiscated and destroyed.

At that time, the clergy of Avranches, led by Father Cornille, set about creating a parish museum where, as the years went by, a large number of objects relating to religion were collected.

The main object in this collection is the skull of Bishop Aubert, marked by the fingerprint of the Archangel Saint Michael. Many visitors come to the museum each year to admire this exceptional object.

The Church of Saint Saturnin

According to several historians and their theories and studies, Saint Saturnin’s church is the oldest religious building in Avranches. The church is rather small in size, which is why work was launched to enlarge it in the middle of the 19th century. At the time, the church was “packed” on market days, according to the parish council.

The Church of Notre-Dame-des-Champs

With its neo-Gothic style, Notre Dame des Champs church was built and extended between the 19th and 20th centuries. These works included the addition of two towers and two massive organs.

The Jardin des Plantes

This hilltop garden offers a splendid view over the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. It was even a major source of inspiration for a short story written by the author Guy de Maupassant.

The storms of 1999 caused a great deal of damage here, leading to compulsory restoration work in 2006. Visitors can now admire twelve themed gardens.

Must-see shops in Avranches

As well as its historic buildings, Avranches has a number of charming little streets, typical squares and arts and crafts workshops.

  1. The La Maison d’en haut boutique is home to designers and craftsmen offering exclusive pieces such as small furniture and jewellery, as well as sweet treats including jams, caramels and even terrines and soups.
  2. Un Bruit qui court is a workshop where you can discover lampshades made from your old fabrics and linens, but also made using your photos, all by a designer from Avranches.
  3. Finally, Le Parchemin des Limbes is a workshop featuring illumination and calligraphy. Workshops and courses are also available here for the most creative of visitors.
